Firstly, you should know that low light does not mean no light at all. Plants need light to live and grow but there are some that can have less light and still can live happily. As a general rule, when you choose a plant for a darker corner or a place which is far away from a window go for the the darker green leaves, as those plants can still thrive in low light conditions.
Below you can find a few plants which will be fine in a low light environment.
Philodendron scandens or Sweetheart Plant
Philodendron scandens is one of my favourite houseplants. It has beautiful dark green heart-shaped leaves, that's why it's called sweetheart plant too. This Philodendron can thrive in a low light spot of the room. I keep mine on the bookshelf which is in a darker corner of the room. Another advantage of this plant is that it is easy to care for. It can be kept as a trailing plant or it can be a climbing plant on a moss pole.
Zamioculcas zamifolia or ZZ plant
ZZ plant can sit in the shade but won't be sad if it gets a little bright light. Zamioculcas zamifolia is another easy care and low maintenance houseplant. ZZ plant tolerates neglect so it will be still ok if you forget watering sometimes. What is more, it can live happily in an office environment. According to a NASA study, it has air purifying qualities which is another good point for this plant and it is a perfect choice for beginners. There is a very uncommon variety of ZZ plant which called Raven and it has almost black leaves. The only downside of this plant that all part of ZZ plant is toxic to humans and pets if eaten. So keep it away from children and dogs and cats.
Sansevierias are very forgiving plants if you forget to water them for a few weeks therefore easy to care. You can find it in nurseries or plant shops as Snake plant or Mother-in-law's tongue. Sansevieria has a lot of varieties. One of the best plant for air purification so it is ideal for the bedroom. As most of the tropical plants, it is poisonous to humans and pets if eaten.
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii)
Peace Lily yet another plant which can thrive in low light conditions. It needs to be well watered and requires higher humidity. It is one of the air purifying plants and it can grow relatively large if it is kept accordingly. It has beautiful white sail-like flowers which in fact are modified leaves.
Stromanthe Triostar is an excellent foliage plant with beautiful colours on the upper side of the leaves like red, white, cream and green and purple on the underside of the leaves. Unfortunately, it is rarely seen in nurseries or garden centres. It likes low light, higher humidity and warm conditions. This plant is related to Calatheas and it can grow large.
